Fly Fishing Rainbow Trout and Grayling in Alaska
Leah Kruse on using OnX to share fishing spots
My Husband, Braydn, and I recently returned from our honeymoon adventure in Alaska. Ten days of traveling, fly fishing, and exploring in Alaska’s interior. Planning for this trip, we knew that fly fishing for Rainbow Trout and Grayling was something we wanted to be prepared for and focus on, but not ever doing this in the area we wanted to do our homework. We set a route, and planned a place to stay each night, and everything fell right into place. On day two, we fly fished with Bear Paw River Guides and had an outstanding day targeting BIG rainbow trout with Guide Shane in Willow Alaska. Truly a day we will never forget. We brought our own fishing gear to fish the rest of the trip with.
In the planning process we used the BWB network to connect with Brian Donaghy who had advice and suggestions on what gear to pack to target Grayling, a species Braydn was itching to fish. We also had conversations with BWB team member Matt Breton, who was visiting the Last Frontier with his family right around the same time as us. Both Brian and Matt were gracious enough to send us Onx pinpoints of places where they had success fishing. Just another real life example of how useful this tool is no matter what your goal is in the outdoors. We continued to use Onx throughout our trip to navigate where we did not have service with downloadable maps, and save waypoints where we explored and had some success fishing.
It was quite an epic trip, and Alaska certainly has not seen the last of us!
